Lighting should fit the space and interior

Valaistuksen tulee istua tilaan ja sisustukseen.

Lighting should serve both the purpose of use and the decoration of the space. Important aspects of lighting design include the adaptability of lighting, the amount of light, the colour temperature and the colour rendering capacity of light sources.

Lighting should be multifunctional

It is not advisable to leave the lighting to general lamps alone. Different and complementary lighting solutions make lighting adaptable. Adjustable spotlights can be used to illuminate different working areas effectively or to highlight individual interior elements. Light sources that give gentler light are suitable for creating a calmer atmosphere. With so-called indirect lighting, light can be projected, for example, through ceiling or wall surfaces into the space, which is a good way to reduce the dazzling effect of light.

Today, space planning emphasizes roomy space. In many homes, for example, the kitchen and living room are the same uniform space. In this case, it is good to think about the light sources for the whole space so that they are compatible with each other.

When designing the lighting of the space, it must be particularly ensured that there is enough light even on dark winter evenings. Dimmability makes the light versatile and allows you to adjust the lighting to suit different times of the day and year.

Pay attention to the interior of the space and its materials and surfaces

When selecting light sources, attention should be paid to both their colour rendering capacity and colour temperature. The Color Rendering Index (CRI) indicates the colour rendering capacity of the light source. The higher this number, the more natural the colors appear. The colour rendering capacity of the light source affects the quality of the lighting in addition to the colour temperature. The colour rendering readout shows what the colours of furniture and other interiors will look like in light. Readouts of 85-90 indicate good color rendering. The luminaires offered by Cariitti have the colour rendering index of more than 90, so they have excellent colour rendering characteristics.

The Kelvin value (K) of the light source indicates the colour temperature of the light. With less than 3,000 kelvins, the light is warm yellow, and around 4,000 kelvins, the light is already white cool. In more than 5,000 kelvins, the light is remarkably cold and bluish. The colour temperature of light plays a major role in creating the mood of the space. Warm-toned lighting brings out the colour of the interior favourably, whether it’s furniture, curtains or a table surface. Similarly, the white interior style that has prevailed for some years is to its advantage in cooler lighting: colder light makes the white space look particularly clean and fresh. Therefore cooler lighting is preferred in light shade toilets and bathrooms.

Decorative elements with surfaces, materials and colour shades affect the amount of light required. Dark and rough surfaces absorb more light than shiny and light surfaces, and the amount of light should then be higher. Lighting should always be pleasant to the eye. Light and shiny surfaces, such as marble or glass mosaics, are to their advantage in the cool white light. The light directly from the ceiling surface to the shiny floor can dazzle the eyes. Lighting can then be carried out with so called indirect lighting, in which case the lighting is carried out by projecting the light through the ceiling or wall surfaces into the space. Indirect lighting can be installed, for example, on top of a cupboard or behind a mirror.

The use of wood and stone in interior decoration is a growing trend. The calm atmosphere of nature’s elements can be further emphasized with warm-toned lighting. Warm light also brings out the colours of the wood better. This idea usually guides the design of lighting in sauna facilities.

There are several light source options, white light 3000K and 4000K and also options with color temperature control CCT. In addition, RGBW can also be included, which brings colours available.

Leading light with optic fibres is the best solution for lighting a wine cellar, as the fibres do not emit heat. Optic fibres also filter out harmful UV radiation.
